The Emotional Mr. Lanceley is a series of photographs illustrating the different human emotions. It is based on “Plutchik’s Wheel of Emotions”, an elegant system developed by the late Psychologist Robert Plutchik, that divides emotions into 8 different categories of three intensities.
I became interested in this project after seeing posters of facial expressions used to teach emotions to students with cognitive and developmental disabilities. The posters are usually cartoony and aimed at children. I thought it would be interesting to create a catalogue of expressions that was a bit more sophisticated and aimed at adults.
After proposing this project to the British actor Christopher Lanceley, he enthusiastically joined the effort. It was amazing seeing him create a slew of honest and sometimes extreme emotions in the span of an afternoon. I asked him what his secret was to generating tears or a fit of rage on command. After I promised to never tell anybody, he admitted that he just imagines the FC Liverpool winning or losing against Manchester United to get big feelings in a hurry.
