In this photograph by Sandy Owens, Charlie, a hanging tree cowdog, anxiously anticipates the next move of the cattle he’s responsible for herding. For his series on herding dogs, Owens traveled across the Midwest visiting different ranches photographing their dogs in action. “I think the photographs are successful because they capture two icons of the American West, herding dogs and cattle,” Owens says. “Of course, dogs have helped man herd cattle and sheep for centuries so looking at the dogs work also gives us a sense of history as well.”
