Award-winning photographer Bastienne Schmidt presents this conceptual series of photographs depicting herself in the role of a “Housewife,” blending in and out into different public and private environments. “Home Stills” will be published as a book in the fall of 2010 by Jovis. (Schmidt’s previous book, ShadowHome, explores her native Germany in photographs taken between 1989 – 2004.)

  1. I don’t know if you could come up with a combination of two words that are less appealing together, than “conceptual” and “German”. One less book I’ll need to buy…

    A Fan

  2. A stunning selection of photographs that are at once pensive and full of tremendous energy. I eagerly look forward to the book where one can garner a cumulative effect of such evocative photographs giving voice to women’s stories.

Although I realize that this may not be the place to have a back and forth between respondents, I must emphatically state that as a jewish american female artist, some of whose family survived the holocaust, I am deeply offended by the blatantly racist comments of “A Fan”. I do not know why I still remain shocked at the condemnation of a whole group of people based on the actions of some since it is born out again and again that this type of ignorance remains at the forefront of our society. But perhaps it is good that I still remain shocked so it continues to spur me to action. We all should all be shocked and moved to take a hard look at our deeply biased beliefs about our neighbors here and around the world.

  4. reply to toni/tlr: how were the above comments “blatantly racist”? they seem pretty ambiguous to me; he could easily be saying he doesn’t like the german schools of photography or conceptual work. even if taken at face value, this is a statement of taste. There’s no hate mongering at all. you should probably tone your cries of racism down a bit.

  5. Hi Bastienne..I particularly like the one of you walking through the snow..very poignant and poetic…….beautiful…
    looking forward to the book.
    love Maxine

  6. I like these very much. Kind of like my real home, I expect not to like it, but then after spending just a little time with them I found that I was comfortable
