“Finding the boat was a race against time. It had been almost 2 weeks since pirates boarded sailboat of American sailor John Long’s boat, killing him, and letting the boat wash ashore on the barren Mexican coastline outside Puerto Madero. We knew that everyday the boat was being buried deeper in the sand and that it was an essential piece of they story. I left for Mexico the next day and met up with writer David Vann. After a wild taxi ride through the Mexican jungle, being ferried across a crocodile infested river by kids in handmade wooden canoes, and walking about a mile on the empty coastline, we finally found the boat. This image became an icon for the mystery surrounding the story of the  ‘Last Voyage of the Cúlin’.”
