“Legendary Children,” a group photography show celebrating the Southeast’s drag queen community, opens at Gallery 1526 this weekend. Co-creator and contributor Jon Dean told PDN via email, “the purpose of this work is to highlight these up and coming queens and paint a new picture of the south.” The show features work from five Atlanta-based photographers who’ve all documented drag queens in their own way. “Blane Bussey places drag queens within the context of Atlanta landmarks such as the Atlanta Zoo, Jon Dean produces experimental, staged portraits of the queer community, Blake England pieces together his intimate and macabre love affair with Violet Chachki throwaway images of his Queen wearing stolen artifacts, jewels and little else, Kevin O candidly photographs the queens before, during and after their performances and Matthew Terrell composes a surreal photojournal of the drag scene,” Terrell said in a statement.
“Legendary Children” opens Sunday, September 1 and runs through Tuesday, October 1, 2013 at Gallery 1526 in Atlanta. The closing reception on Saturday, September 28, 7-11pm, will feature live performances by Brigitte Bidet, Cayenne Rouge, Edie Cheezburger, Ellisorous Rex, Evah Destruction, Jaye Lish, Kryean Kally, Lavonia Elberton, Mo’Dest Volgare and Violet Chachki. The evening is Emceed by Nicole Paige Brooks of RuPaul’s Drag Race.
